Ilhan Always Advocates for our Kids

Ilhan For Congress

--

MINNEAPOLIS — Former educator, Kate Wittenstein, shares why Ilhan Omar is vital for our children.

No child should be deprived of a healthy meal or be shamed by their school and pursued by debt collectors. I’m proud my Congresswoman Ilhan Omar reintroduced the No Shame at School Act with Senator Tina Smith to prohibit schools from publicly shaming students who are unable to pay for school meals or hiring debt collectors to recover unpaid school meal debt.

As a former educator, I’m thankful that we have Congresswoman Ilhan Omar advocating for our kids, making sure they are fed and not embarrassed when we provide the support they need to thrive. Her legislation is badly needed across the country.

Ilhan is a true leader in putting an end to child hunger, not just introducing the No Shame at School Act, but also introducing the Universal School Meals Program Act with Senator Bernie Sanders. Pushing to offer free breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a snack to all students from preschool to high school, regardless of income.

This is the leadership we deserve and need for our community. Ilhan is the only member of the Minnesota delegation on the Education and Workforce Committee and she’s working every single day to make sure our community has the resources we need. I want kids to be able to go to school, focused on learning and making friends, not worried about someone finding out their family is struggling financially or if a debt collector will knock on their door.
